Bradwell: No-fly zone over n-plant

From the archive, first published Wednesday 7th Nov 2001.

A ban has been imposed on aircraft flying over Bradwell Power Station.

The Civil Aviation Authority has been ordered by the Department of Trade and Industry to stop any planes from flying over the plant as a security measure.

The no-fly zone, which is now in place, will stretch for a two nautical mile radius from the power station and 2,000ft above it.

The move is the latest in a general tightening up of security at the Bradwell plant in response to terrorist threats since the September 11 attacks in the US.

A spokeswoman for the CAA said it would rely on people calling if they spotted an aircraft in the controlled space and people breaching the order could be prosecuted.

She added the restriction had been imposed to stop light aircraft from flying close to the station and sparking security scares.

The move to ban aircraft came after British Energy concerns over speculation that an airborne terror attack could be made, said a government spokeswoman.
